The Nuts and Balls Metric of Hair Care Products

What is the proper amount of product to use? Is it as little as a droplet or is it as much as a pea-, hazelnut- (filbert-), walnut-, or tennis ball-sized dollop? Find out how much of a hair care or styling product to use and how to use it

Rooms look cluttered with too many doodads no matter how decorative they seemed in the store. Too much make-up overwhelms and distorts a face. By the same token, too much of a perfectly useful hair care product can cause problems. The smart solution to this practical problem lies in the motto ‘Less is more!’ While this maxim does not always apply, it does hold true for the use of hair care products. Hair care and styling products rarely work better if used in excess. On the contrary, the proper and most effective amount is often smaller than imagined.

How should you use hair care or styling products and how much?

Hair end fluid is your weapon against split ends. These fluids are spread through the hair ends in droplets. The ingredients coat the frizzy hair ends with an ultra-thin film. As a result the hair looks less shaggy.

Hair oil must be used in small droplets. Distribute one or two drops across the palms of your hands. Then touch the hair ends with the palms of your hand. This is the best way to benefit from the hair oils and enjoy brilliant luster and manageability. If hair oil is used in this way before the shampoo it will protect the hair ends from drying out. Hair oils are also ingredients of leave-in hair treatments. Curly hair may need slightly more than 1 or two drops of hair oil.

Hair wax: Use hair wax with caution! Start with minute amounts to avoid winding up with hair, which clings to your scalp and appears oily. After weighing down your hair with wax, a thorough shampoo is the only effective remedy. Start by applying a pea-sized amount of wax. Distribute the wax in the palms of your hand and then work it through your hair.

Hair gels range in holding power between soft hold and ultra-strong hold. Using a large amount does not impart the holding power of a strong hair gel to gels, which are designed to provide soft hold. The holding power of the gel not its amount determines how soft your hair will be after the application. Start with a pea-sized dollop and increase the amount as needed.

Conditioner: A filbert or hazelnut-sized amount of conditioning rinse is sufficient. Briefly allow this type of conditioner to unfold its benefit before rinsing it out thoroughly.

Shampoo: Dependent on the length and thickness of your hair, you should use a hazelnut- or walnut-sized amount of shampoo. It is best to apply the shampoo in small portions to your hair. Thoroughly rinse out even the last traces of shampoo.

Anti-frizz lotions protect the hair from drying out and make it smooth. Anti-frizz products are available in the form of shampoos or conditioners. Use the products as directed or use a hazelnut-sized amount of them.

Hair Treatments: Work a walnut-sized amount of the hair treatment product through the towel-dry hair. Then allow the ingredients to work their magic.

Styling mousse is applied to dry hair until the hair feels slightly damp. This may require an up to tennis ball-sized amount for long hair. Less mousse is sufficient for short hair. Start with a walnut-sized dollop and add more to your hair as needed.
